遭わせる

あわせる【会わせる･遭わせる】

1 〔人に〕 let sb see 《another》; make [have] sb meet 《another》.

●(間に入って)二人を会わせてやる arrange a meeting between two persons.

●父は私をその人に会わせなかった. My father did not allow me to see him [her].

・私はその親子を会わせてやった. I brought the father [mother] and son [daughter] together.

・彼女に会わせてほしい. I'm asking you to let me meet her. | I'd like you to arrange for me to meet her.

・会わせる顔がない. I'm too ashamed to meet him [her, the person, them].

2 〔経験･事物に〕 expose 《sb to…》; subject 《sb to…》.

●危ない目にあわせる expose sb to danger

・痛い目にあわせる subject sb to pain; make sb suffer; 〔比喩的に〕 make sb pay for sth; teach sb a painful lesson

・あいつ, 今度妹に近づいたら痛い目にあわせてやる. The next time he approaches my (younger) sister, I'll teach him a painful lesson [make him pay for it].

・本人のためにも一度痛い目にあわせておいたほうがいい. It'd be to the person's own benefit, too, if we taught him [her] an early painful lesson.
